Mine Pit Design Engineer

About the role

Kumba Iron Ore is seeking a Mine Pit Design Engineer to create and maintain efficient pit designs that meet geotechnical and safety standards while maximising economic resource utilisation. You will work within the Technical & Integrated Planning department, supporting the broader mine‑plan strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure pit designs comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act and internal regulations while staying within production budgets.
• Update designs promptly when geological deviations occur, maintaining accuracy, cost‑effectiveness, and alignment with long‑term plans.
• Incorporate market trends and geological changes into the overall mine plan to optimise production output.
• Manage section expenditure against approved budgets, driving cost control and savings.
• Build and maintain stakeholder relationships, gathering input to meet production targets.

Required profile

• Grade 12/N3 Technical or National Diploma in Mining Engineering (NQF6); B‑Degree/BTech in Mining Engineering (NQF7) preferred.
• 3‑5 years of operational mine planning experience.
• Strong understanding of geological and geotechnical environments and their impact on pit design.
• Knowledge of the full mining lifecycle and its business implications.
• Valid South African driver’s licence.
