Medical Officer – Clinical Research (TB & HIV)

About the role

The Desmond Tutu TB Centre at Stellenbosch University is seeking a full‑time Medical Officer to lead clinical activities for the DEFIANT study, a new research project focused on adolescent TB and HIV. This two‑year fixed‑term position offers the opportunity to work within a world‑leading multidisciplinary team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the clinical team and oversee day‑to‑day operations of the DEFIANT study.
• Conduct clinical examinations, collect samples, and coordinate chest X‑ray and PET‑CT referrals.
• Manage project timelines, ensure regulatory and ethical compliance, and report adverse events.
• Provide direct clinical care to enrolled adolescents during enrolment and follow‑up visits.
• Support investigators with grant writing, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.

Required profile

• MBChB qualification.
• Minimum two years of project and people management experience in a clinical research setting.
• At least two years of clinical work with paediatric/adolescent patients in HIV or TB.
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subjects Protection training.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
