Laboratory Manager – Histology (Level 9)

About the role

The Division of Clinical Anatomy at Stellenbosch University seeks a Laboratory Manager to lead its histology laboratory. The role combines expertise in laboratory procedures, health and safety, and research support to ensure a productive environment for teaching and research activities.

Key responsibilities

• Managing daily operations of the histology laboratory and overseeing ongoing projects and accounts.
• Assisting principal investigators in planning, developing, troubleshooting and implementing new protocols to support research and generate third‑stream income.
• Developing, revising and implementing SOPs, quality control/assurance and validation programmes to ensure safe, efficient and GLP‑compliant laboratory practices.
• Ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines, including Good Laboratory Practice, Occupational Health and Safety Act and National Health Act.
• Managing training, competency assessments and supervision of laboratory personnel and students.
• Administering budgets, cost control, equipment maintenance and related administrative procedures.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in histology, medical sciences, anatomy or a related field.
• Minimum four years of histology laboratory experience at a supervisory or manager level.
• Proven knowledge of histology and immunohistochemistry techniques, materials and equipment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Experience in a tertiary research environment and familiarity with occupational health and safety legislation.
