Mechanical Design Engineer (TC 85)

About the role

Our client, a leading South African water‑treatment and environmental solutions provider, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to translate process engineering concepts into detailed mechanical documentation and support the build and installation phases of projects.

Key responsibilities

• Convert Process Engineers’ P&IDs into comprehensive mechanical drawings, including General Arrangement (GA) drawings, piping layouts, isometric drawings, fabrication details, and installation drawings.
• Act as the technical liaison between Process Engineers, the workshop build team, and on‑site installation crews.
• Serve as the engineering custodian during construction, ensuring design intent, standards, and specifications are adhered to.
• Prepare accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and assist procurement with technical specifications.
• Review and approve fabrication and installation work against engineering drawings.
• Identify and resolve design or build issues during workshop assembly and on‑site installation.
• Collaborate closely with Process Engineers, Project Managers, and workshop personnel to deliver projects on time and to quality standards.
• Maintain drawing standards, revision control, and engineering documentation.

Required profile

• Proven experience in mechanical design within an engineering or production environment.
• Strong understanding of water‑treatment or related industrial processes is advantageous.
• Ability to work effectively as a technical bridge between design and manufacturing teams.
• Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high engineering standards.

Required skills

• Mechanical drawing creation (GA, piping layout, isometric, fabrication, installation).
• P&ID interpretation and translation into detailed mechanical documentation.
• Bill of Materials (BOM) preparation.
• Revision control and engineering documentation management.
