Maintenance Assistant (Broilers) – Poultry

About the role

Sovereign, a national supplier of quality chicken products operating in five provinces, is looking for a thorough and committed Maintenance Assistant for its Broiler operations in the Agricultural division. The role covers basic, preventative and corrective maintenance of equipment, machinery and infrastructure so that broiler farms stay operational and support the production teams' KPIs. It reports to the Farm Manager and carries the TASK grade T06.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out preventative cyclical maintenance and repairs.
• Keep critical feeding, drinking, heating and ventilation equipment running.
• Respond promptly to breakdowns and call-outs.
• Complete job cards accurately and in detail to build a record of work.
• Meet health and safety standards, enforce LOTO procedures and run toolbox talks.
• Maintain good housekeeping in the farm workshop and on the job.
• Follow prescribed SOPs and assist Safety Representatives with their monthly audits.

Required profile

• Grade 12 certificate or equivalent.
• 1 year of experience in mechanical or electrical repairs and maintenance.
• Preference given to applicants of designated groups under the Employment Equity Act.

Required skills

• Knowledge of tools and basic hand skills.
• Neatness, attention to detail and effective communication.
• Basic preventative maintenance, fault finding and problem solving.
• A hands-on, proactive approach with a do-it-right-first-time mindset.
