Machine Learning Engineer

About the role

A financial services firm listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange is hiring a Machine Learning Engineer in Cape Town, working in a hybrid arrangement. The role covers designing, training and evaluating ML models and building scalable, automated end-to-end ML pipelines.

Key responsibilities

• Design, train and evaluate machine learning models (predictive, deep learning, or NLP/GenAI depending on project needs) to solve complex business problems.
• Lead the development of scalable, robust and automated end-to-end ML pipelines, covering data ingestion, feature engineering, training and deployment.
• Contribute to the architecture of the ML infrastructure so that models are containerized, deployed efficiently and integrated into core software products.
• Implement continuous monitoring of model performance, data drift and latency to drive iterative improvements after deployment.
• Run experiments to evaluate new algorithms, open-source frameworks and methodology advances.
• Work with Data Scientists, Software Engineers and Product Managers to turn business requirements into technical solutions.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification (Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, etc.) is beneficial.
• 3 to 5+ years of professional experience developing, scaling and deploying ML models in production.
• Strong Python and SQL skills, with solid statistical modelling, feature engineering and data manipulation knowledge.
• Familiarity with software engineering best practices, including Git, CI/CD pipelines and clean, testable code.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
