Legal Advisor - Financial Services

About the role

FNB is looking for a Legal Advisor in its Johannesburg operations to support a specific business area with timely and accurate legal counsel. The role sits under the guidance of more experienced legal professionals and a dedicated Legal Head, offering a path to grow expertise in a dynamic financial services environment. It suits legal professionals awaiting admission as an attorney or who have recently been admitted, with up to two years of post-admission experience.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, interpret and negotiate commercial agreements (supplier, client, service provider, technology and confidentiality agreements), manage the contract lifecycle and identify and propose solutions to legal and commercial risks.
• Conduct legal research and analysis, draft legal opinions, memoranda and advisory notes, and advise on the legal risks of new products, projects and initiatives.
• Assist in coordinating disputes, liaise with external counsel, support litigation strategy, and review pleadings, correspondence and settlement proposals.
• Support legal and regulatory matters in the financial services and payments sector, including data privacy and technology services.
• Maintain legal matter registers and trackers, manage legal repositories and contract databases, and support governance and committee reporting.

Required profile

• LLB degree; awaiting admission as an attorney or admitted with up to two years of post-admission experience.
• Experience in commercial law, gained through articles of clerkship, in-house departments or legal practice.
• Practical experience drafting, reviewing or negotiating agreements, and preparing legal opinions or memoranda.
• Exposure to banking, payments, insurance, investments and fintech, and to regulatory compliance, litigation and dispute resolution, is advantageous.
