Lecturer/Senior Lecturer – Medical Officer

About the role

The University seeks a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to serve as a Medical Officer, responsible for developing and delivering clinical skills training to MBChB students across the foundational and intermediate phases. The role combines teaching, simulation‑based education, assessment, and occasional clinical duties within the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate hands‑on clinical skills training for undergraduate medical students using simulation equipment and authentic patients.
• Design, develop, and deliver simulation scenarios that enhance clinical reasoning, teamwork, and patient safety.
• Conduct OSCE, OSPE and other assessments of clinical competence.
• Support curriculum development and integration of clinical skills across the first three years of the MBChB programme.
• Mentor students in professionalism, communication and patient‑centred care.
• Develop a research profile related to clinical medicine or scholarship of teaching‑learning, including supervision and dissemination.
• Provide ad‑hoc clinical support to the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent (NQF level 8).
• Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or equivalent.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) recognised by the HPCSA.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Proficiency in operating simulation equipment for clinical skills training.
