Lecturer in Islamic Studies (Full‑time, Permanent)

About the role

The Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape is seeking a full‑time permanent Lecturer in Islamic Studies. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary faculty that emphasizes ecumenical, decolonial, and contextually grounded scholarship across South Africa and the Global South.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate, Honours and Master’s courses in Islamic Studies.
• Supervise Honours and Master’s students and contribute to postgraduate programme development.
• Conduct high‑quality research and publish peer‑reviewed outputs.
• Participate in departmental and faculty committees.
• Coordinate research seminars, public lectures and community‑engaged scholarship.
• Co‑ordinate modules and courses at the departmental level.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Islamic Studies, Islamic Theology, Islamic Law, Islamic Philosophy, Islamic Ethics or a related field, with registration for a PhD.
• Demonstrated expertise in at least one core area of Islamic Studies (e.g., Qur’anic studies, Hadith, Islamic law, theology, philosophy, ethics, spirituality).
• At least one accredited publication.
• Evidence of innovative teaching practice at undergraduate and Honours level.
• Competence in Arabic to engage primary Islamic texts.
• Active involvement in a relevant community‑engagement activity.

Required skills

• Arabic language proficiency for primary source analysis.
