Lecturer in French Language and Literature

About the role

The School of Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Humanities, University of Cape Town, is inviting applications for a permanent appointment as Lecturer in French Language and Literature, with the capacity to teach in one of the other Romance languages (Italian, Portuguese or Spanish) as an interdisciplinary opening. The French section offers undergraduate majors and postgraduate study (Honours, Research Masters and PhD) and is involved in international research projects.

Key responsibilities

• Teach and convene French Language and Literature from beginner to advanced levels (75% of teaching load).
• Teach and convene one of the additional Romance languages (25% of teaching load).
• Engage actively in research and publication, and contribute to the French Section's research projects and the School's research culture.
• Carry out academic administration.

Required profile

• Completed PhD in French Language (such as socio)linguistics, discourse analysis, French didactics, TFL or translation), or a closely related field.
• Experience teaching French language and literature at tertiary level.
• A research strategy and publications commensurate with career stage.
• Demonstrated high oral and written proficiency in French and in English.
• Demonstrated oral and written proficiency in Italian and/or Portuguese and/or Spanish.

Advantageous

• Experience teaching Italian, Portuguese or Spanish at secondary or tertiary level.
• Interdisciplinary research experience, independent and collaborative work, administrative skills.
• Interest in internationalisation (e.g. study abroad programmes) and student research supervision.
