Laboratory Technician – Foundry Sand & Metallurgical Testing

About the role
The Laboratory Technician supports the Foundry operations at Weir Minerals by performing sand and metallurgical testing, ensuring that all manufacturing processes meet strict quality and safety standards. Working on‑site in Port Elizabeth, you will collaborate closely with production and technical teams to identify non‑conformances and drive continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities
- Demonstrate 100% commitment to zero‑harm safety behaviours and adhere to all safety guidelines.
- Perform routine foundry sand testing (AFS, fines, strength, LOI) and assist with weekly mixer calibration.
- Carry out metallurgical testing, including sample preparation and analysis of castings and in‑process samples.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is calibrated, maintained, and operated in compliance with safety standards.
- Identify and report non‑conforming materials, equipment irregularities, and deviations immediately.
- Support preliminary investigations of sand quality issues and casting defects.
- Accurately record test results, complete mechanical and heat certificates, and maintain QA documentation.
- Perform testing in accordance with internal procedures and relevant industry standards.
- Collaborate with the Laboratory Technician to sustain daily laboratory operations.
