Junior Mechanical Engineer - High Voltage Equipment

About the role

ACTOM is recruiting a Junior Mechanical Engineer within its Engineering Department, reporting to the Engineering Manager of High Voltage Equipment. The role covers the mechanical engineering aspects of high voltage equipment, including assessing project requirements, testing and evaluating components, and liaising with internal and external customers and suppliers.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee the mechanical engineering aspects of high voltage equipment and the department
• Assess project requirements and measure the performance of mechanical components and devices
• Use computer-aided design and modelling software such as Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD
• Liaise with internal customers, external customers and suppliers on technical issues
• Undertake relevant research and present designs and ideas to managers and clients
• Test, evaluate, modify and re-test products
• Write monthly progress reports, manuals and other documentation, and analyse complex data
• Formulate and present internal technical courses and work towards professional registration with ECSA
• Adhere to SHEQ management requirements (ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001), ensure quality assurance and documentation control, and handle defective or damaged parts

Required profile

• BSc / BEng degree in mechanical engineering
• 1 to 2 years' experience
• Registered as a candidate engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
• Willingness to travel to site locations when required
• Exposure to ISO quality standards and project management principles is a plus

Required skills

• Proficiency in mechanical CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD or Inventor
• Basic knowledge of FEA and simulation tools is an advantage
• Effective technical skills, analytical thinking and attention to detail
• Good verbal and written communication, teamwork and commercial awareness
