Project Engineer (Innovation and Technology) - 12 Month Contract

About the role

Rand Water is looking for a Project Engineer (Innovation and Technology) on a 12-month contract, based in Johannesburg. Reporting to the Innovation Manager and the Engineering Innovation Consultant, the incumbent provides process, industrial and project engineering input in the planning, development and implementation of innovation and technology projects. The role is also described as a Senior Process or Industrial Engineer.

Key responsibilities

• Work independently on process, industrial and project engineering tasks, adapting standard techniques or devising new approaches to unique situations.
• Use engineering methods, process mapping, systems thinking and performance analysis to find operational challenges and improvement opportunities.
• Take part in pilots and proof-of-concept projects, including digital, AI and data-driven pilots, and deliver them on time and within budget according to the Programme Master Plan.
• Turn pre-project recommendations into project scopes, functional and detailed requirements, process calculations and drawings, data and system integration needs, technical specifications, tender documents, bid evaluations and business cases.
• Interface with mechanical, electrical, automation, architectural and civil engineers, multi-stakeholder teams, consultants and contractors to deliver integrated projects.
• Review project outputs for technical accuracy, adequacy and compliance with standards and best practice.
• Take part in scoping meetings, reviews, engineering studies and site activities, and provide technical reports to management.
• Identify innovation improvement opportunities and contribute to improving the section's policies, systems and procedures.

Required profile

• Masters (MEng/MSc) or PhD in Chemical or Industrial Engineering; bachelor's degree holders are not eligible.
• 5 to 10 years of post-master's experience (PhD academia counts).
• Professional registration or eligibility for registration with the Engineering Council of SA.
• Experience in process and industrial engineering related to process infrastructure, water purification, digital technologies (digital twins, IoT, data analytics) and innovation.
• Demonstrated technical research and writing skills, and project engineering and management experience.
