Junior Electrical Technician

About the role

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) supports the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) projects and operates the MeerKAT and Hartebeesthoek telescopes. The Junior Electrical Technician will assist the functional manager, electrical engineers and project managers to ensure smooth operation and successful delivery of telescope and infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Develop conceptual, preliminary and detailed electrical designs and ensure they meet required standards.
• Capture and incorporate requirements from functional managers and senior engineers into designs.
• Perform configuration management, quality assurance and maintain accurate drawings.
• Diagnose and resolve electrical system issues, including site visits and investigations.
• Monitor power system performance and support testing, installation and maintenance activities.

Required profile

• Diploma, Advanced Certificate or NQF Level 6 in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• 1–2 years of experience in electrical engineering, including design, assessment and project support.
• Excellent problem‑solving, analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Self‑driven, goal‑oriented and able to work independently.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office packages.
• Technical report writing ability.
