IT Internship – Service Desk, Security & System Engineer (Pietermaritzburg)

About the role

Gijima HCM is offering three paid internship positions in Pietermaritzburg, focused on Service Desk coordination, Operational Security and System Engineering. The roles are designed for recent IT graduates to gain hands‑on experience in a corporate environment.

Key responsibilities

• Service Desk Co‑ordinator Intern – log and prioritize support calls, manage escalations and maintain service records.
• Operational Security Intern – assist with threat detection, monitor security platforms and develop dashboards for security reporting.
• System Engineer Intern – support Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory and VMware environments under senior engineers.

Required profile

• Completed a 3‑year degree, national diploma or diploma in Information Technology (NQF Level 6) with clear credit.
• No criminal record and excellent written and spoken English.
• Unemployed, not enrolled in any tertiary programme and not participating in another learnership or internship.
• Resident of Pietermaritzburg (relocation not offered), South African citizen, aged under 35 on 1 July 2026.

Required skills

• Performance monitoring concepts.
• Microsoft Configuration Manager / Intune (patch management).
• Azure security tools – Microsoft Defender, EDR, Identity & Access Management.
• Basic knowledge of VMware (preferred).
• Understanding of network, system and application security, including firewalls and intrusion detection (Checkpoint, Darktrace, Windows, macOS).
• Wintel administration, TCP/IP fundamentals.
