Head of Department – Physical Sciences

About the role

Our client is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Department for Physical Sciences to provide academic leadership and drive excellence within the department. The role focuses on supporting educators and ensuring outstanding learner performance, especially at the Matric level.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Physical Sciences department and set strategic direction.
• Support and mentor teachers, fostering professional growth.
• Oversee curriculum planning, implementation, and quality assurance aligned with the CAPS curriculum.
• Analyse learner performance data and design intervention strategies.
• Manage classroom and instructional standards across the department.
• Engage with learners, parents, and staff to build strong stakeholder relationships.
• Drive strategic planning, problem‑solving and decision‑making processes.

Required profile

• Relevant teaching qualification with Physical Sciences as a subject.
• SACE registration (essential).
• Minimum 7 years of teaching experience, including Matric Physical Sciences.
• Strong knowledge of the CAPS curriculum.
• Excellent leadership, organisational and communication abilities.
• Previous experience as a Head of Department or similar management role is advantageous.
• Experience in independent schools and matric marking is a plus.
• Proficiency with educational technology and digital learning platforms.
