Technical Training Officer – Instrumentation

About the role

The Technical Training Officer – Instrumentation will design, deliver and manage accredited and community‑based instrumentation training for apprentices, artisans and mill staff at Sappi’s Skills Centre. The role combines curriculum development, hands‑on facilitation and compliance with QCTO and SETA standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain training demand schedules for apprenticeship programmes, community short courses and internal technical training.
• Review, create and update training materials, assessment tools and practical rigs to meet instructional design and QCTO accreditation requirements.
• Facilitate theoretical and practical sessions, monitor learner progress and provide coaching, mentorship and development plans.
• Conduct assessment, moderation and portfolio reviews in line with QCTO standards and issue apprentice certificates.
• Manage training equipment, tools and consumables, including forecasting, inventory control and procurement.
• Build and maintain training rigs that reflect new plant technology and ensure regular safety inspections.
• Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to secure authorisations and supervision for workplace‑based training.
• Maintain all accreditation, quality‑assurance and compliance documentation for the Skills Centre.

Required profile

• Trade‑tested Artisan (Instrument Mechanician) with at least 5 years experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Relevant qualification such as OD, ETDP; assessor and moderator credentials are advantageous.
• Experience in training facilitation and curriculum delivery preferred.
