About the role

Africa Global Logistics South Africa (AGL) is hiring a permanent, full-time Gate Checker for its shipyard operation in Cape Town. The Gate Checker inspects all equipment moving in or out of the terminal gate facility and keeps the terminal operating systems up to date. The role is part of the service desk and requires accurate, timely work.

Key responsibilities

• Perform a physical inspection of all equipment entering or leaving the facility.
• Verify and update equipment numbers in the operating system so the unit number matches the equipment actually passing through the gate.
• Record details such as equipment number, placards on all four sides, running reefer status, reefer temperature settings and readings, out-of-gauge dimensions, seal numbers, genset number, fuel level in the genset, tractor licence plate and damage or cleanliness.
• Complete pending transactions and give the trucking vendor a printed Container Interchange Report.
• Meet performance targets: average gross moves per quay crane of 37 GMPH, berth production at least meeting terminal/shipping line contract targets, and an average 30-minute truck turnaround.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines set by the service desk supervisor, and willingness to work long hours when needed.
• High standard of work ethic ensuring 100% accuracy, and good communication with the supervisor.
• Knowledge of the flow of cargo through a port facility and of the technical and functional aspects of the work.
• Preferred: 1-2 years of experience in logistics, warehousing or transportation, and experience with inventory control, equipment handling or gate operations.

Required skills

• Use of terminal operating systems, including handheld data devices.
• Certification in safety or hazardous materials handling may be required depending on the facility.
• Training in gate operations or terminal logistics is a plus but not mandatory.
