Forensic Firearms & Toolmark Examination Expert (Remote)

About the role

A boutique consultancy, Gramian Consultancy, is looking for an experienced Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Examiner to join a project that evaluates and improves AI capabilities in forensic science. You will review AI-generated responses to complex forensic scenarios, judge their scientific accuracy and give expert feedback so AI systems reflect accepted forensic practice. No previous AI experience is required. The work is remote and flexible.

Key responsibilities

• Review AI model benchmark answers across 10 forensic firearm and toolmark examination test cases.
• Evaluate the scientific accuracy, completeness and reasoning of responses on microscopic comparative ballistics and toolmark identification.
• Assess analyses of firing pin impressions, breech face impressions and other cartridge case markings, and the interpretation of bullet characteristics and rifling impressions.
• Check whether AI conclusions match established laboratory methodology and AFTE standards, and identify technical inaccuracies and unsupported conclusions.
• Provide clear written and verbal feedback on model performance and recommend improvements to AI-generated forensic assessments.

Required profile

• Direct professional experience as a Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Examiner or an equivalent specialist.
• Practical experience with comparison microscopy and examination of bullets and cartridge cases.
• Demonstrated expertise in bullet and toolmark comparison, identification and interpretation.
• Hands-on experience examining firing pin and breech face impressions and other firearm-related toolmarks.
• Familiarity with forensic laboratory procedures, documentation and scientific reporting.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent written communication skills.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of AFTE standards, theory and examination practices.
• Microscopic comparison of bullets and toolmarks.
