Director, Senior Economist

About the role

Mastercard’s Economics Institute is seeking a Director, Senior Economist to lead economic research for Sub‑Saharan Africa, with a focus on South Africa, and to support broader analysis across the EEMEA region. Reporting to the Chief EEMEA Economist, you will shape macro‑economic perspectives that inform Mastercard’s strategy and product development.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain macro‑economic outlooks for Sub‑Saharan Africa.
• Assist the Chief EEMEA Economist in producing regional economic forecasts for the EEMEA market.
• Write regular research notes and blog‑style outlooks using Mastercard’s unique data assets.
• Prepare briefing documents for senior leadership and regional advisory boards.
• Present insights at customer forums, industry events and consulting read‑outs, positioning Mastercard as an economic thought leader.
• Collaborate with data scientists and consulting teams to explore alternative data sets and advanced forecasting techniques.
• Design and deliver interactive, tailored presentations that translate complex analysis into actionable stories.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (MA or higher) in economics or a related field.
• 10+ years of private‑sector experience analysing economies in Sub‑Saharan Africa and the wider EEMEA region.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated use of both traditional and experimental economic approaches with an entrepreneurial mindset.
• Strong project‑management skills, capable of handling complex timelines.
