Director of Development – Nonprofit Fundraising

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Director of Development to lead our fundraising operations for a remote, Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit. The ideal candidate will combine strategic vision with operational excellence to grow a diversified funding portfolio and drive multi‑million‑dollar fundraising results.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Development Division, setting strategy and performance targets.
• Build and diversify the funding portfolio, identifying new foundation, corporate, and government opportunities.
• Oversee the grant pipeline, proposal workflow, and funding calendar to ensure timely, compliant submissions.
• Maintain visibility into active grants, pending applications, award amounts, reporting deadlines, and renewals.
• Develop and improve SOPs, quality‑assurance systems, dashboards, and workflows.
• Hire, coach, and manage Development team members, delegating effectively and setting clear expectations.
• Provide regular reporting to Executive Leadership on pipeline status, revenue forecasts, and risks.
• Implement AI, automation, and technology solutions to increase efficiency and quality.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible nonprofit development experience.
• 7+ years of experience managing Development teams.
• Proven success securing foundation, corporate, and government funding.
• Experience overseeing multi‑million‑dollar fundraising portfolios.
• Strong project‑management, organizational, and relationship‑management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
