Deputy Country Director and Trade Adviser

About the role

The Department of Business and Trade (DBT) in South Africa is seeking a proactive Deputy Country Director and Trade Adviser to support UK trade and investment objectives. You will work closely with the Country Director, leading initiatives across Professional & Business Services and Advanced Manufacturing, and help shape the UK’s growth agenda in South Africa and the wider Southern Africa region.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Country Director in leading DBT South Africa and representing UK trade interests.
• Provide strategic direction, coordinate regional activities, and deputise for the Country Director as needed.
• Lead the Professional & Business Services and Advanced Manufacturing portfolios, originating opportunities and delivering trade deals.
• Engage with senior stakeholders, policy makers, and private sector partners to improve market access.
• Deliver regional support across Southern Africa, operating independently where DBT has no permanent presence.

• Highly organised, proactive, and confident with strong commercial instincts.
• Ability to work with limited supervision and manage senior stakeholder relationships.
• Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail.
• Self‑starter who can drive work creatively and strategically.
