Data Engineer (Data Visualization Specialist)

About the role

A global engineering and energy technology organisation is looking for a Data Engineer with a focus on data visualisation to join its Cape Town technical software development team. You will create cloud‑based data products, analytical tools and high‑performance visualisations that support engineering, manufacturing and operational decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and deliver data products for internal users.
• Build advanced visualisations using Vega, D3.js and Power BI.
• Develop custom visual encodings for complex technical and operational data.
• Optimise browser‑based visualisations for large datasets.
• Design scalable and accessible data models.
• Make data‑architecture decisions, including batch vs. stream processing.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to identify new data products and business applications.
• Work with Data Scientists to deploy and interpret machine‑learning models.
• Investigate methods for accurate visualisations from large language model prompts.
• Ensure visualisations are statistically accurate, informative and easy to interpret.
• Produce documentation and communicate product releases to users.
• Deliver projects independently within agreed timelines in an Agile environment.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or Data Science.
• At least two years of experience in software, engineering or a related quantitative discipline.
• Proven experience writing and delivering software products.
• Competence in a general‑purpose programming language.
• Experience using SQL or another database query language.
• Familiarity with declarative visualisation technologies such as Vega or D3.js.
• Experience with a business intelligence platform such as Power BI.
• Strong statistical knowledge and ability to create accurate visualisations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
