Commis Chef – Kitchen Assistant

About the role

The Commis Chef supports the kitchen team by preparing ingredients, cooking simple dishes and maintaining a clean, safe work environment. This full-time position is based at our Mahikeng location and reports to the senior chef.

Key responsibilities

• Portion, chop, wash, peel and store fruits, vegetables and other ingredients.
• Weigh, measure and mix ingredients according to recipes.
• Prepare and cook hot and cold foods, following quality, presentation and food‑preparation checklists.
• Operate ovens, stoves, grills, microwaves and fryers safely.
• Test food for doneness, monitor quality during preparation and ensure correct portioning.
• Set up and break down workstations, clean and disinfect kitchen areas, tools and equipment.
• Check and record appliance and food temperatures.
• Follow all safety, security and hygiene policies and report any incidents.

Required profile

• Ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods and perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 25 lb.
• Willingness to follow company policies, maintain confidentiality and wear a clean uniform.
• Good communication skills and a team‑oriented attitude.

Required skills

• Food preparation techniques (cutting, portioning, mixing).
• Operation of kitchen equipment: ovens, stoves, grills, microwaves and fryers.
• Food safety and hygiene practices, including temperature monitoring.
