Chief Technology Officer - Technology Scouting and Due Diligence

About the role

This fully remote, independent contractor position works 30 to 40 hours per month and is cross-border, requiring flexibility for international calls across Asian and United States market hours. It drives technology scouting and commercialisation strategy by assessing the commercial potential of scientific innovations, patents, university spin-outs and early-stage science-led companies, coordinating specialist due diligence and recommending whether to invest, licence, partner or form new ventures.

Key responsibilities

• Sourcing scientists, inventors, patents, research programmes, university spin-outs and early-stage companies aligned with the investment focus.
• Building and maintaining relationships with universities, research institutes, technology transfer offices, founders, incubators, venture funds and corporate innovation teams.
• Maintaining an opportunity pipeline from initial screening through diligence, investment decision and commercial follow-up.
• Evaluating scientific evidence, technology differentiation, IP ownership, platform requirements, route to market, scalability and principal risks.
• Coordinating scientific, intellectual property, regulatory, technical and commercial diligence.
• Formulating recommendations on investment, licensing, partnership, acquisition, incubation or company formation.
• Establishing screening criteria, mapping priority networks and introducing standardised initial reviews.

Required profile

• Proven experience sourcing scientific technologies, IP, university spin-outs or early-stage companies.
• Established network across universities, research institutes, technology transfer offices, founders or investors.
• Ability to analyse technology and platform requirements to judge investment or business development viability.
• Cross-border availability for calls across Asian and US time zones.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of patents, licensing, inventorship and intellectual property ownership.
• Sound commercial judgement and confidentiality awareness.
• Desirable: experience in biotech, pharma, life sciences, medtech, diagnostics or deep tech; technology transfer, venture capital or corporate venturing background; university spin-out support experience.
