Chief Marine Engineer Officer (Harbour Tug)

About the role

Transnet NPA is re-advertising a permanent Chief Marine Engineer Officer position in the SLJ, F&B, Tugs, Engineering Crew 1B department, based in Saldanha. The officer manages the marine engineering functions of a harbour tug so that plant and auxiliary equipment operate safely and efficiently, with sound preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and on-board repairs.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain equipment according to preventative maintenance schedules to keep the tug available
• Manage on-board fault diagnosis and repairs, and attend to unplanned breakdowns
• Manage operation of plant and auxiliary equipment to sound marine engineering standards
• Carry out checks of plant and equipment, including operational surveillance while the craft is underway
• Manage periodic lay-ups and overhauls together with the Marine Technical Manager
• Allocate resources such as tools, power tools and spares
• Train subordinates and mentor trainee chief engineers
• Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory and company requirements, and maintain accurate records of engine room machinery
• Manage quality management policies and standards, project management, and crew safety

Required profile

• Valid 2nd Engineer Officer (<3000 kW) CMEO Port Ops endorsed, or a valid Chief Engineer Officer (Port Operations)
• Added advantage: Chief Engineer (unlimited) and Project Management certificate
• Knowledge of statutory and regulatory bodies, environmental management principles, and project management
• Leadership, decision making, communication and record keeping
