Chemist / Supervisor

About the role

SGS, a global testing, inspection and certification company, is hiring a Chemist / Supervisor for its laboratory in Greater Hibberdene. The Chemist carries out all sample analyses accurately and on time according to Test Method Instructions, while assisting the Section Manager in complying with the Laboratory Quality Manual and health and safety procedures. The role also includes supervising the shift.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse all samples using the correct procedures and methods, record results and evaluate them, including interpreting reports
• Verify instruments, assist with their maintenance and calibrate and carry out minor maintenance of laboratory equipment
• Identify early biases and QC issues, diagnose suspect results and help rectify problems
• Authorise and validate new methods under the Section Manager's guidance, calculate results in standard format and transfer data to SLIMS
• Keep analytical data traceable, file equipment records, dispose of samples safely and re-analyse samples outside control limits
• Assist with gas cylinder changes, laboratory cleaning, SANAS audits and laboratory documentation
• Train new staff on methods and procedures, take part in operational integrity projects and use the Stop Work Authority when risks are unclear
• Supervise the shift: control timekeeping, check daily attendance, plan leave to minimise overtime and ensure enough staff are on shift

Required profile

• National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry; BTech Chemistry or BSc Chemistry is an added advantage
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory
• Experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility and in instrumentation, data collection and reporting
• Supervisory experience is an advantage
• Fully acquainted with the SLIMS system (administration and operation)
• Knowledge of the Laboratory Quality Management System and Good Laboratory Practice
• Ability to troubleshoot instruments and methods, and to verify calibration standards, quality control standards and certified reference materials
