Back End Engineer – Cloud & Real‑World Hardware

About the role

We are a small, focused engineering team building reliable backend systems that interact with real‑world hardware and cloud infrastructure. Based in Cape Town, we need a mid‑level backend engineer who loves testing, iteration and systems engineering to help scale our platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain backend services as we expand features and customers.
• Build and debug our core API platform, ensuring high performance and reliability.
• Write and maintain automated unit and integration tests.
• Investigate and resolve production incidents quickly.
• Contribute to infrastructure‑as‑code using AWS CDK.
• Improve observability, logging and system validation.
• Document system architecture, decisions and operational procedures.

Required profile

• 3‑5 years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and a methodical approach to production issues.
• Comfortable working in a small, fast‑moving team.
• Clear written communication and documentation habits.

Required skills

• Proficiency in TypeScript or Python (or both).
• Experience with PostgreSQL and Linux command‑line environments.
• Hands‑on knowledge of AWS services and AWS CDK.
• Familiarity with messaging systems such as MQTT or SQS.
• Understanding of streaming technologies like WebRTC, RTSP or RTMP.
• Exposure to C++, Go and Node.js is a plus.
