Automation Engineer

About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Automation Engineer to join a well‑established industrial manufacturing operation in Epping, Cape Town. The role focuses on developing, maintaining and optimising SCADA and control systems while driving continuous improvement across multiple facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and optimise SCADA systems (Ignition, FactoryTalk, Siemens WinCC).
• Drive plant automation, visualisation and process improvements.
• Standardise control systems across operations.
• Manage machine upgrades and control system replacements.
• Develop automated performance, downtime and breakdown reporting.
• Update and maintain electrical and control system drawings.
• Implement and manage control change request processes.
• Assist with fault‑finding and troubleshooting of electrical and automation systems.
• Support instrumentation calibration and maintenance activities.
• Provide technical support to multiple manufacturing facilities.
• Manage automation‑related projects from concept through implementation.
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety standards.

Required profile

• Relevant engineering or automation qualification.
• Minimum 10 years’ experience in manufacturing, processing, heavy industry or industrial automation.
• Strong communication and technical reporting skills.
• Valid driver’s licence and reliable transport.

Required skills

• SCADA development experience (Ignition, FactoryTalk, Siemens WinCC).
• Advanced PLC programming (Siemens, Allen‑Bradley, Delta).
• Industrial communication protocols (Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP).
• Integration of field devices into PLC and SCADA systems.
• Knowledge of electrical control systems and instrumentation.
• Java scripting (advantageous).
• Experience with electronic maintenance systems (advantageous).
