Associate/Full Professor – African Literary Archive

About the role

The Humanities Faculty seeks a distinguished scholar to lead the African Literary Archive as an Associate or Full Professor. The role will drive the Faculty’s strategy to revitalise the humanities, position the university as a regional and international leader, and advance scholarship on 19th‑century southern African literary texts.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and lead high‑level research programmes on the African Literary Archive in collaboration with the History Department.
• Establish and nurture scholarly networks across Africa and internationally.
• Deliver lectures and seminars across undergraduate programmes and supervise postgraduate research.
• Produce publications in top‑rated local and international presses.
• Mentor emerging scholars and contribute to the Faculty’s transformation agenda.
• Initiate partnerships and explore digitisation of archival materials.

Required profile

• Recognised expertise at the intersection of African language studies, archival studies, sociolinguistics, literary and historical studies.
• Proven track record of high‑level network engagement and scholarly publications.
• Experience supervising and training postgraduate students in interdisciplinary research.
• Ability to work with multiple southern African indigenous languages and texts in translation.
• Demonstrated innovation, rigor and technical competence in archival research.
