Workshop Assistant

About the role

We are seeking a motivated Workshop Assistant to join a fast‑paced engineering workshop in Middelburg. The role offers hands‑on experience supporting fitters, turners and other artisans while developing practical mechanical skills in a safety‑focused environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assist fitters, turners and other workshop staff with daily tasks.
• Support assembly, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
• Operate basic workshop machinery and hand tools under supervision.
• Perform measuring, cutting, grinding, drilling and fitting operations.
• Maintain workshop cleanliness and ensure proper storage of tools and equipment.
• Load, unload and move materials as required.
• Conduct basic equipment inspections and report defects or safety concerns.
• Help with stock control, tool management and material handling.

Required profile

• Fitter & Turner qualification, apprenticeship or relevant mechanical engineering training (advantageous).
• 1–3 years of experience in a mechanical, engineering, manufacturing or mining workshop.
• Physically fit and able to perform manual labour.
• Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to work overtime when needed.

Required skills

• Use of hand tools and measuring equipment.
• Operation of basic workshop machinery.
• Basic understanding of fitting, turning and machining processes.
• Ability to read simple engineering drawings (advantageous).
