Volunteer Doctor – Rural South Africa

About the role

The Tshemba Foundation seeks registered South African doctors to volunteer in underserved rural hospitals and clinics across Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Volunteers will provide direct and indirect patient care, support local staff, and help develop health interventions while staying in a secure lodge within Moditlo Private Game Reserve.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver clinical care in various hospital departments and surrounding clinics.
• Provide postgraduate support, training, and mentorship to local medical staff.
• Assist with administrative, quality‑improvement, and management projects.
• Collaborate with local teams to design health protocols and interventions.

Required profile

• Current medical license in good standing and registration with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• Registered medical professional; priority given to GPs, family physicians, neurologists, dermatologists, hospitalists, ophthalmologists, paediatricians, general surgeons, optometrists, speech therapists, and dieticians.
• Willingness to work in a rural setting for a minimum of four weeks (flexible based on specialty).

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and patient management.
• Teaching and mentorship of healthcare staff.
• Ability to develop and implement health protocols.
