Supervisor Mineralogy Sample Preparation

About the role

SGS, a global testing, inspection and certification company with over 2,500 laboratories, is hiring a Supervisor for its mineralogy division's sample preparation unit. The role plans and executes sample preparation work, trains technicians and ensures samples are delivered to mineralogists accurately and on time.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute work with the Mineralogy Manager and Head of Department, and carry out routine and non-routine tests following or modifying established procedures.
• Train existing, new and temporary technicians and operators, and plan work so service goals are met.
• Report infringements or non-compliances by other staff to the mineralogists and/or manager.
• Prepare mineralogical samples, including wet and dry screening, filtration (vacuum and pressure), crushing, splitting, pulverisation, polishing of thin sections, magnetic and heavy liquid separation, and HLS and Carpco quality checks.
• Ensure accurate weighing, recording of sample flow and chain of custody, and prevent contamination, sample loss and sample swapping.
• Calculate and evaluate interim test results, report results and deliver samples within the timeframe set by the HOD and mineralogists.
• Complete and file control charts for instrument standards, keep the work area clean and safe, and comply with SGS quality and safety requirements.
• Work in other parts of the Met/Min division if required, and perform overtime as needed.

Required profile

• Senior certificate or equivalent.
• At least 10 years as a mineralogical sample preparation technician and 5 years in operational planning.
• Supervisory experience is an advantage.

Required skills

• Ability to follow written English instructions precisely and good English communication.
• Basic computer literacy (Word and Excel).
