Data Evaluator - Fire Assay

About the role

SGS, a global testing, inspection and certification company, is hiring a Data Evaluator for its Fire Assay laboratory. The Data Evaluator analyses assigned samples accurately and on time according to test method instructions, validates analytical results and reports them, and supports the Section manager in complying with the SGS Laboratory Quality Manual and health and safety procedures.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate, validate and report analytical results, and ensure their technical accuracy
• Monitor analytical processes and take remedial action on deviations or discrepancies
• Consult with the Head of Department on retest anomalies and report faulty equipment to the Section Manager
• Use SLIMS for data entry and transfers, and keep all data and calculations traceable and filed
• Record and file equipment records for quality purposes, and re-analyse samples outside control chart limits
• Ensure compliance with quality procedures and the Laboratory Health and Safety Act
• Work overtime when necessary, wait for the relief shift to hand over smoothly, and deputise for Shift Supervisors when required
• Stand in for Chemists, assist in training new staff and operators, and help with control, timekeeping, overtime planning and production planning
• Take part in operational integrity projects, use the Stop Work Authority when risk control is unclear, and perform other reasonable tasks assigned by the manager

Required profile

• Grade 12 / Matric or N3 with Mathematics and Science
• National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, or equivalent experience recognised through Recognition of Prior Learning
• At least 4 years of relevant Fire Assay / reporting laboratory experience
• Supervisory skills are an advantage

Required skills

• Competent technical knowledge of Fire Assay analytical processes and procedures
• Computer literacy in SMILS and MS Office
• Able to work independently, coordinate several activities and communicate effectively with technical and management staff
