Strategic Commercial Procurement Manager

About the role

A leading company in the technical supply chain serving the Energy, Mining and Construction sectors is looking for a Strategic Commercial Procurement Manager. The role oversees and expands the General Procurement category, combining hands-on sourcing and expediting with a strategic, analytical and business-development mandate. It also involves mentoring a junior procurement team.

Key responsibilities

• Bring structure and strategic vision to the category, challenge existing ways of working and implement more effective procurement processes.
• Turn operational and market data into clear, actionable business and category recommendations.
• Coach, develop and mentor a junior team of buyers, managing workload, productivity, turnaround times, efficiency and quality.
• Manage existing client relationships, research target markets, prepare client-specific proposals and pursue new business opportunities.
• Source new local and international suppliers and products, build strategic supplier relationships and negotiate favourable commercial terms.
• Take part in preparing commercial and technical client proposals, including specification clarification, product quality and profit margin analysis.
• Work with logistics to expedite orders, ensure fulfillment, resolve client claims and maintain quality standards.
• Travel locally and internationally (about one week per month) to maintain and develop market presence.
• Perform regular activity analyses, support staff performance appraisals and report to the Technical BU Manager.

Required profile

• Minimum of 5 years' experience in procurement, sourcing or category management.
• Proven track record of leadership, team coaching and staff development.
• Strong analytical skills and strategic thinking, with experience refining processes and challenging operational methods.
• Sound business acumen and strong negotiation skills across local and international markets.
• Excellent written and verbal English; willingness and ability to travel locally and internationally.
• Desirable: proficiency in French or Portuguese, and supply chain experience in the Energy, Mining or Construction industries in sub-Saharan Africa.
