Specialist Engineer – IPP Programme Technical Lead

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled Specialist Engineer to provide strategic technical leadership for Independent Power Producer (IPP) programmes, focusing on grid integration, utility planning and the South African energy transition.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist engineering advice on design and implementation of IPP programmes.
• Conduct grid connection analyses and assess network capacity constraints.
• Support Eskom, municipalities and other stakeholders with utility planning and infrastructure requirements.
• Advise on technical risks, bid evaluation criteria and programme design considerations.
• Review and influence grid codes, standards and regulatory frameworks to ensure equitable access for IPPs.
• Identify emerging technologies and international best practices impacting the energy sector.
• Lead technical projects to improve efficiency, reduce costs and mitigate risks.
• Develop and mentor technical teams while managing specialist resources.
• Build and maintain relationships with government departments, utilities, regulators, industry bodies and development partners.
• Represent the organisation on national industry forums and technical working groups.

Required profile

• BSc Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent qualification.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience.
• Professional registration as a PrEng with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of power systems, grid integration, utility planning, infrastructure development, project management methodologies, energy sector legislation, regulations and standards, and financial/business case analysis.
• A Master's degree in Engineering, a legal qualification or a postgraduate business qualification is advantageous.
