Software Engineer II (Hybrid, Cape Town)

About the role

Morae is looking for a Software Engineer II to join its Product Engineering team in Cape Town. The role is hybrid, requiring three days a week on‑site, and focuses on building and maintaining backend services while collaborating with product, QA, and design colleagues.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend APIs and services using Python and .NET.
• Implement application features from design through production release.
• Contribute to frontend work when needed, preferably with React.
• Write clean, maintainable code and adhere to engineering standards.
• Create and maintain unit and integration tests; participate in code reviews.
• Diagnose and resolve defects and production issues.
• Apply AI‑assisted development techniques to improve coding, debugging, and testing.
• Validate AI‑generated outputs for correctness, security, and maintainability.
• Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and estimation.
• Collaborate with QA, Product Owners, and UX teams to ensure proper test coverage and clear requirements.

Required profile

• 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Matric/Grade 12 qualification.
• Experience building APIs and backend services with Python and .NET.
• Proficiency with relational databases and data modelling.
• Experience working in Agile product teams.
• Ability to evaluate and validate AI‑assisted outputs within development workflows.
• Preference for candidates based in Cape Town.
