Software Engineer, Backend – Core/API & Process Automation

About the role

As a Backend Software Engineer on Camunda’s Core/API & Process Automation team you will work on the heart of Camunda 8 – an event‑sourced, distributed workflow engine that powers critical business processes for thousands of customers worldwide. You will help improve performance, ensure data integrity, and build next‑generation features that enable AI agents to drive automation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and optimise core components of the event‑sourced workflow engine.
• Investigate and resolve performance bottlenecks in hot paths.
• Design versioning and replay strategies to guarantee reliable process execution.
• Handle concurrency challenges between engine execution and user mutations.
• Collaborate with a global team to deliver new AI‑driven automation capabilities.
• Own well‑scoped features from design through production in an open‑source environment.

Required profile

• Strong background in backend engineering and distributed systems.
• Deep understanding of event sourcing, concurrency control, and performance tuning.
• Ability to work autonomously in a fully remote, globally distributed team.
• Passion for building reliable, high‑throughput systems that impact millions of users.
