Shift Primary Health Nurse

About the role

The Shift Primary Health Nurse provides specialist professional nursing care within a primary health setting, ensuring high‑quality patient assessment, treatment and education while working rotating shifts, including weekends and public holidays.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including health history, physical examinations and interpretation of vital signs and test results.
• Develop, implement and monitor specialist nursing care plans and coordinate multidisciplinary interventions.
• Prescribe and dispense medication in the absence of a pharmacist or medical practitioner, within the scope of practice.
• Counsel patients and families on conditions, treatment options and preventive health measures.
• Supervise and coach nursing staff, conduct performance assessments and oversee practical training of learners.
• Participate in budgeting for specialty equipment, stock audits and audit nursing care plans.
• Prepare reports, extract data and contribute to the development of care standards.

Required profile

• National Senior Certificate.
• Nursing Diploma or Degree.
• Post‑graduate qualification in Primary Health Care (e.g., one‑year diploma in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment or Treatment and Care).
• 2–3 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
• Dispensing Course certificate.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse with additional Primary Health Care qualification.
• Willingness to work shift patterns, including weekends and public holidays.
