Senior Software Engineer - Back-end

About the role

Capitec Bank is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead technical initiatives and architectural decisions on its emerging markets platform, which builds banking services for entrepreneurs, small businesses and side-hustlers. The team is small and lean, and the engineer works closely with stakeholders and senior business leaders.

Key responsibilities

• Take ownership of selected back-end domains within the emerging markets platform
• Lead the design of complex back-end systems and set technical standards through architectural decisions
• Build and maintain integrations for entrepreneur accounts, merchant acquisition and payment services, including account lifecycles, transactions, payment rails and cards
• Design and implement distributed, event-driven and domain-driven solutions
• Mentor and lead the existing engineering team
• Translate business objectives into technical solutions with stakeholders and senior business leaders
• Evaluate and introduce technologies that improve the platform and development processes

Required profile

• 6+ years of proven back-end software development experience delivering production-grade systems at scale
• Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot within event-driven or distributed systems
• Hands-on experience with Kafka (or similar), PostgreSQL and AWS
• Experience with domain-driven design and event-driven architectures is highly valued
• Experience in payments, fintech or financial services preferred
• Ability to engage with senior business stakeholders and to work independently and take ownership
• Minimum: Grade 12 National Certificate; a relevant tertiary qualification in information technology is preferred
• Clear criminal and credit record
