Senior Java / Data Platform Engineer (Hybrid, Cape Town)

About the role

We are looking for a senior Java / Data Platform Engineer to join our cutting‑edge tech company in Cape Town. The role combines backend development with large‑scale data engineering, working on production‑grade systems that power AI‑driven analytics for multiple industries.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain high‑performance Java/Scala services and micro‑services that process massive data sets.
• Build, optimise and operate data pipelines and ETL workflows using Apache Spark and related distributed processing frameworks.
• Collaborate with cloud teams to deploy and scale services on cloud platforms, ensuring reliability and security.

Required profile

• Several years of experience building production‑grade backend and data platforms.
• Comfortable working across data pipelines, backend services and cloud environments.
• Strong focus on clean code, modern delivery standards and deep technical problem‑solving.

Required skills

• Java and/or Scala programming.
• Apache Spark and distributed data processing.
• Data pipeline / ETL and batch processing frameworks.
• Spring / Spring Boot, REST APIs, micro‑services architecture.
• Containerisation (Docker) and CI/CD tooling, Git‑based workflows.
• Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
