Rock Engineering Specialist

About the role

The Rock Engineering Specialist will join the Mine Technical Services team to provide specialist rock engineering support for a high‑grade underground gold operation. Based in Johannesburg, the role focuses on safe, compliant and efficient mining practices while supporting long‑term operational growth.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist rock engineering support across underground mining operations in line with legislative and company requirements.
• Ensure compliance with Regulation 14.1(8) and Section 7(2) of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Develop, review and implement rock engineering and strata control designs to optimise ground stability and mining performance.
• Participate actively in mine planning, scheduling and operational review processes.
• Conduct rock engineering assessments, monitor geotechnical conditions and recommend appropriate ground control measures.
• Support the continuous improvement of mine design standards and rock engineering practices.
• Carry out workplace inspections, audits and risk assessments to ensure statutory and operational compliance.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to geotechnical personnel and operational teams.

Required profile

• Government Certificate of Competency in Rock Engineering (Underground Metalliferous Mines).
• Degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Rock Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• Extensive experience in underground rock engineering within gold mining operations.
• Strong knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act and related regulations.
• Experience supporting Mine Technical Services, mine planning and operational decision‑making.
