Research Nurse – Clinical Studies

About the role

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is seeking a Research Nurse to support ongoing HIV and sexual health studies. The role involves high‑quality data collection, clinical assessments, specimen handling, and pre‑ and post‑test HIV counselling in an academic research environment.

Key responsibilities

• Inform participants about study objectives and obtain informed consent following SOPs.
• Administer questionnaires, conduct interviews, and perform basic physical examinations.
• Draw blood, collect biological specimens, label, store, and transport samples to the laboratory.
• Provide health education, adherence counselling, and refer participants to appropriate care when needed.
• Maintain accurate clinical records, complete case report forms, and manage inventory of drugs, samples, and study materials.
• Supervise field‑work team, develop study‑specific job aids, and ensure quality control of documentation.
• Facilitate staff training on study protocols and SOPs, and report progress to stakeholders.

Required profile

• Diploma in General Nursing (3‑year) and registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Minimum one year of nursing experience in STI/HIV research.
• Advanced Diploma in Midwifery or related qualification is an advantage.

Required skills

• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
• Specimen collection and handling.
• Clinical data entry and case report form completion.
