Research Nurse – Clinical Research Unit

About the role

The Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) at Wits seeks a Research Nurse to coordinate trial activities and ensure the smooth execution of infectious‑disease clinical studies at Jose Pearson TB Hospital in Gqeberha.

Key responsibilities

• Recruit and screen patients, educate them on study protocols, and obtain informed consent.
• Schedule and book study visits, collect medical histories, and allocate screening IDs.
• Assess inclusion/exclusion criteria, randomise participants, and conduct follow‑up visits.
• Perform study procedures such as ECGs, spirometry, sample collection and questionnaire administration.
• Process laboratory samples, maintain freezer and fridge temperatures, and manage equipment for sample storage.
• Ship samples according to SOPs and ensure data quality, entering information into eCRFs within required timelines.
• Monitor adverse events, report SAE/EAE, and handle protocol deviations.
• Prepare source documentation, regulatory files, and audit‑ready site files.

Required profile

• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related medical field.
• Professional Nurse registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• 1–2 years of experience in clinical research (3–5 years for non‑interventional studies).
• Strong attention to detail, leadership ability and good communication skills.
