Professor of Statistics (Permanent)

About the role

The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences is seeking an experienced academic to join its School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences as a Professor of Statistics. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules, develop new courses, and lead research initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver and coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
• Develop new statistics modules and programmes.
• Supervise and co‑supervise Honours, Master's and PhD research projects.
• Conduct high‑quality research and publish in accredited national and international journals.
• Provide mentorship to junior staff and contribute to departmental administration.

Required profile

• PhD (NQF Level 10) in Mathematical Statistics.
• At least 7 years of experience managing large class groups.
• Minimum 10 years of teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate statistics.
• Proven record of at least 7 peer‑reviewed publications.
• Experience supervising Master's and PhD students.
• Membership of the South African Statistical Association is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency with statistical software packages such as SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA.
• Ability to analyse data using advanced statistical techniques.
• Strong written and verbal communication in English.
