Professor of Statistics (Permanent)

About the role

North-West University is seeking a permanent Professor of Statistics to lead teaching, research and module development within the School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences. The role involves delivering undergraduate and postgraduate courses, supervising graduate research and mentoring junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver and coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
• Design and develop new statistics courses and programmes.
• Conduct high‑quality research and publish in accredited journals.
• Supervise and co‑supervise Honours, Masters and PhD students.
• Provide administrative and managerial support to the subject group.
• Act as mentor for junior academic staff.

Required profile

• PhD (NQF Level 10) in Mathematical Statistics.
• At least 10 years of teaching experience in statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
• Minimum 7 years experience managing large class groups.
• Proven record of at least seven peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated supervision of Masters and PhD candidates.
• Membership of the South African Statistical Association is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency with statistical software packages such as SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA.
• Ability to apply advanced statistical techniques for data analysis.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
