Professional Nurse - Specialty Operating Theatre (Grade 1-2)

About the role

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Administration is recruiting a Professional Nurse for a specialty operating theatre unit in Newcastle. The nurse provides high-quality, cost-effective and equitable nursing care within the professional and legal framework, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Key responsibilities

• Provide nursing care in line with the scope of practice and standards of the specialty, and promote quality specialised care
• Take charge of the unit when the operational manager is absent and act as team leader in their absence
• Oversee CSSD and pack room sterility functions
• Provide direct and indirect supervision of staff on day and night duties
• Monitor and evaluate patient care and maintain accurate, complete patient records
• Conduct clinical audits, compile summary reports and submit timely statistics
• Participate in policy, procedure and quality improvement plan development and implementation
• Take part in research and priority programmes aimed at reducing morbidity, mortality and communicable and non-communicable diseases
• Deliver peri-operative care and emergency care for life-threatening emergencies
• Protect and advocate patient rights and resolve complaints at the first level of management
• Work flexibly with a multi-disciplinary team and rotate to meet service delivery needs
