Principal Engineer - Bridges

About the role

AECOM’s Enterprise Capabilities team is seeking a Principal Engineer – Bridges to lead the delivery of diverse local and international bridge projects from its South Africa office.

Key responsibilities

• Act as Discipline Lead for bridges on large‑scale transportation projects.
• Provide technical expertise for studies, design and planning of new bridges, culverts and other road and rail structures in line with local and international codes.
• Conduct complex value‑engineering evaluations and determine alternative designs, materials and construction techniques.
• Integrate with global teams and multidisciplinary leads.
• Design rehabilitation and upgrades for existing bridges and drainage structures.
• Oversee preparation of construction drawings, project specifications and contract documentation.
• Ensure compliance with Quality Control Policies and Quality Management Systems.

Required profile

• Minimum fifteen years of relevant experience, including site work.
• Professional registration (ECSA or international equivalent).
• Proven track record on bridge/structure designs and collaboration with international, multicultural teams.
• Strong experience reviewing complex technical projects.
• Experience with international standards such as AASTHO, AREMA, Aus‑Codes, BS.
• Degree in Civil Engineering; postgraduate studies in structural or bridge engineering are a benefit.
