Outside Operator – Paper Machine (PM2)

About the role

Sappi is seeking an Outside Operator to optimise PM2 performance on its paper machine. The role involves regular inspections, set‑up and adjustment of equipment across the raw stock refiner, machine refiner, forming and press sections, and wet‑end area, ensuring safe and efficient operation.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct plant inspections and monitor equipment performance using check sheets.
• Support machine efficiency by cleaning pulp build‑up and preventing process interruptions.
• Operate and maintain wet‑end process systems, including stock preparation, forming, pressing, vacuum and cooling towers.
• Perform sampling and process quality‑control activities for raw and refined stock.
• Prepare machinery for start‑up, operate external control panels, and execute refiner changes where licensed.
• Coordinate maintenance notifications, perform equipment isolations, and support shutdown activities.
• Maintain high housekeeping standards and ensure equipment such as showers and clothing are in good condition.
• Promote health, safety, environment and quality compliance by identifying hazards and reporting incidents.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) with Maths & Physical Science or N3 in Pulp and Paper.
• National Diploma in Pulp and Paper or Chemical Engineering is advantageous.
• Minimum 2–3 years experience in a paper‑machine manufacturing environment.
