Occupational Health Nurse – Risk-Based Medical Surveillance

About the role

The Occupational Health Nurse will lead a comprehensive occupational health programme, ensuring employee wellbeing while complying with South African health and safety legislation. The role combines clinical care, risk‑based medical surveillance, and advisory services for both employees and management.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and evaluate risk‑based medical surveillance programmes (pre‑employment, baseline, annual, transfer and exit screenings).
• Manage occupational safety, health and waste activities and oversee injury‑on‑duty case administration.
• Provide primary health care services, respond to medical emergencies, and support worker reintegration after prolonged absence.
• Identify and manage chronic diseases early to maintain productivity.
• Offer consultancy on absenteeism, sick‑leave management and other occupational health matters.
• Ensure compliance with the Health & Safety Act and related legislation.
• Investigate client queries, monitor hazard‑exposure trends and implement preventative measures.
• Participate in internal and external audits and maintain occupational health equipment and records.

Required profile

• National Senior Certificate.
• Degree or Post‑Basic Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing.
• Certificates in Audiology, Vision and Spirometry.
• Valid Dispensing certificate.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and SASOHN.
• 3‑5 years of experience in Occupational Health Nursing.
• Good understanding of the Health & Safety Act and related legislation.
• Proficiency in MS Office / Office 365.
